September is Healthy Aging Month, a great time to think about how to stay healthy and happy as we get older. Did you know that over 17% of people in Clay County are 65 years old or older? Here are some easy tips for seniors and their caregivers to help everyone enjoy life more.

Eat Well

  • Healthy Foods: Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and healthy fats. These foods help keep you strong.
  • Drink Water: Make sure to drink enough water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Smaller Portions: Eating smaller meals more often can be easier on your stomach.

Stay Active

  • Exercise: Try to get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week. Walking, swimming, or biking are great choices.
  • Strength Training: Lift light weights or do exercises at least two times a week to keep muscles strong.
  • Flexibility and Balance: Activities like yoga or tai chi can help with balance and flexibility, which is important to prevent falls.

Take Care of Your Mind

  • Stay Social: Join clubs, volunteer, or spend time with family and friends to stay connected.
  • Learn New Things: Try a new hobby or take a class to keep your brain active.
  • Relax: Try meditation or deep breathing to help with stress.

Go to the Doctor

  • Regular Checkups: See your doctor for regular health check-ups and tests to catch any health problems early.
  • Manage Health Issues: If you have health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s advice.

Stay Safe at Home

  • Make Changes: Put grab bars in the bathroom, improve lighting, and remove anything that could cause trips.
  • Emergency Plans: Keep important phone numbers and medical information close by in case of an emergency.

Get Good Sleep

  • Sleep Routine: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day to help your body know when to rest.
  • Comfortable Bedroom: Keep your room dark, quiet, and cool to help you sleep better.

Healthy aging is all about living well and enjoying life. By following these tips, seniors can feel better and enjoy their days more.
