Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that occrs when the body's immune system destroys the pancreatic cells that produce insulin.

Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes that can appear and become more severe over time:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Increased urination
  • Bedwetting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fruity smelling breath
  • Irritability
  • Behavioral changes
  • Blurred vision

If your child displays any of the above symptoms, follow up with their health care provider or pediatrician. Early detection and screening of Type 1 diabetes can reduce risks, help families prepare, and lead to improved outcomes.
